An Aspiring New-Age Hippie June 30, 2008

In good old Idaho, I was “the hippie” at my school– the one who didn’t own guns; the one who drove a Subaru with great gas mileage and lots of liberal bumper stickers; the one who had never been on a jetski or ATV and had never been hunting; the one who listened to oldies; the one whose mother practiced massage, pressed flowers, and didn’t shave her legs; the one who didn’t go to church; the one who didn’t know anyone in the military; the one who just wanted to hear an “amen” for world peace.

Obviously I’m not a real hippie. I’m not 50 years old, I’m not a nudist, and I didn’t go to any bra-burning, flag-burning, or weed-burning festivals. So I guess I considered myself a new age hippie. Some disagree, saying “you shower too often” and “your hair isn’t long enough,” and the unstated “you’re not skinny enough.”

Yeah, well. Just because I’m not Janis Joplin reincarnated doesn’t mean I can’t have the same ideals as the long lost flower children. Where have they gone? I’m an “aspiring” new age hippie because I don’t recycle like I should, I eat too much junk food, and I can always be a little more peaceful (can’t we all…). I’ve bookmarked those things to work on throughout my life.

Anyway, I’m here as a blogger for many reasons. One is that I can’t seem to keep a regular journal, so this is an alternative. Another is that I’m trying out freelancing, and I heard this would help get my name out. Another is that I’m so used to writing for school and extracurricular newspapers that I don’t want to give it up, so I’m here to practice. Another reason is that I hope to connect with other bloggers and take leaves from their books… I’ll take advice, I’ll take music suggestions,  blog suggestions, book suggestions, just a simple connection… anything.

Thanks for taking a look at this page. If there’s anything you want me to cover, please let me know!
