You should read "how I live now" by Meg Rosoff; a friend suggested it to me and it was a quick and interesting read... very interesting... ': L

Anyway, if you're free this weekend, I'd love to call and try to catch up (though I don' think it's possible in one phone call :P) Anyway, I miss you and love love love you!

Jo,
I absolutely love this post. It really made me think and try to figure out how I feel about the things you pointed out. I definitely understand what you're saying. To some extent in our society and in our generation (as we try so hard to prove that we are more than texting and rap music and facebook), there's some sort of 'peer pressure' to understand the suffering of others. If you don't, you must not be 'worldly' or 'cultured' or any of those other very mature sounding qualities. But, in reality, all of the comprehension of suffering or global problems happens inside our own minds. Our proximity to suffering doesn't make it easier to understand or automatically give us a more genuine sympathy. I don't think suffering in the U.S., like Katrina or 9/11, is any easier to grasp than suffering in Darfur or Kabul. It's all about, like you said, understanding the things that we can and learning to do our best to handle the things we can't (i.e. death). I'm not sure if I'm articulating any of this well enough, but the bottom line is that this was a great post. Also, thanks for the shout-outs.
